The patient:

Meet a personal trainer in his early 30s based in Downtown Long Beach. A few years ago, fitness changed his life so profoundly that he made it his career. Since then he's coached dozens of clients, helping real people in the Long Beach community build better bodies and better health. On top of his full client schedule, he'd been training hard for something personal: his first competitive Muay Thai match. That meant two-a-day sessions, often squeezed in between back-to-back clients. The ambition was there. The work ethic was undeniable. Then his lower back started talking back.


What was going on

After a thorough evaluation, the suspected culprit was lumbar spine instability; the vertebrae of his lower back were moving slightly more than they should. For most people, this produces a dull, nagging ache. For a Muay Thai fighter who needs explosive rotational power on every kick, it was a significant problem.


Kicking hard in Muay Thai demands a massive amount of force generated through the hips and transferred through the lower back and torso. When the lumbar spine isn't stable enough to handle that load efficiently, the body protects itself, tightening up, compensating, and eventually sending pain signals loud enough that you have to listen. His body was sending those signals.


"If you can't rotate powerfully through your torso, you can't kick hard. And if you can't kick hard, you can't fight. We had to fix the foundation."

The treatment approach

For a high-output athlete like him, a chiropractic adjustments-only plan wouldn't cut it. His program combined three pillars:


  • Pillar 1: Soft Tissue Work

Targeted manual therapy to the extensor muscles of his lower and middle back — the muscles that were chronically overworking to compensate for the instability beneath them. Releasing that tension was the first step to letting the deeper stabilizing muscles do their job.

  • Pillar 2: Rotation-Focused Strength Training

Not generic "core exercises," rather movements specifically designed for how a fighter moves. This included threading the needle for controlled spinal rotation, single-leg kickstand stiff-legged deadlift variations for hip hinge stability under load, and back extension machine work incorporating torso rotation. Some exercises trained his ability to initiate and produce rotation powerfully. Others trained his ability to resist and decelerate it, equally critical for a sport where you're absorbing and returning force constantly.

  • Pillar 3: Chiropractic Adjustments

Used strategically alongside the other two pillars, not as the primary tool. For athletes, adjustments work best when paired with soft tissue release and targeted strength work. Alone, they rarely hold. Together, they accelerate everything.
